Touching Smoke Scavenger Hunt Announcement

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Welcome to The Hunt! This event will run for the entire length of October. The rules are simple. Airicka will post 3 blog links on her Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/airicka.phoenix) every morning. Your job is to go through each one of the blogs and find the blog with the button (sample button provided below). Only one blog will have a button each day and it will be hidden in one of their 2012 posts. Each button has a letter that will, in the end, spell out a message. (You might want to save each letter to win a separate prize if you guess the message before the game is over). When you find the button, copy the link above and go to Airicka’s website (
http://airickaphoenix.com/Author/?p=1967) and put the link into the raffle-copter. Easy right?

Don’t want to go searching through posts and blogs? Well, there is an app for that… no I’m kidding, but there is a free pass.

Follow each blog, leave your name and email address on their rule post in the comment box and the person who has the button will email you back with the link. Then, all you have to do is go to Airicka’s website (http://airickaphoenix.com/Author/?p=1967) and drop the link into the raffle-copter.

Now for the really important rules.

RULES

~ Everyone & anyone can participate.
~ The link MUST be put PRIVATELY into the raffle-copter on this page. Do Not publicly display anywhere else! if I find that people are sharing the buttons/letters/links, they will be disqualified from the games.
~ Do NOT share the link with anyone. Same as above.
~ Do NOT tell anyone which blog you found that day’s button on. I’m repeating myself? I know. This is the biggest deal breakers for me.
~ If you guess what the letters spell before the game is over, please do NOT share the answer. Privately message me and collect your prize!
~ Please DO tell others about The Hunt.
~ Please DO ask questions if you have any.
~ Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

With vengeance in her soul, Chloe is even more determined to follow through on her vow when she discovers the true identity of her enemy and how he is connected to her.

Experience the world of vampires hunter’s, vampires and mythology with Chloe in this exciting series.

Overall:

This series is an action packed adventure with a battle between humans and vampires running strong. Fans of Buffy will love these books, but they have their own flavor and flair, make no mistake about it. The romantic tension between Chloe and Drew carries you through all the books and I was eagerly awaiting the outcome.

This series reads like a serial novel and I enjoyed it very much. Action at the forefront, characters that kept your interest and a plot that was a great blend of YA, romance, paranormal and vampire hunting.

It is hard to describe the series of events without giving too much away-I hate that in a review-but I think you will fall in love with Drew and Chloe and I am looking forward to more books from this author.

Interview:

1. Writing YA is so much fun. What is your favorite part about it?

My favorite part about writing YA is that I’m writing from a teenagers point of view and I don’t have to be a grownup when I am writing my teen characters. It’s nice to not have to worry about the things grownups worry about and be a kid again for a while.

2. Tell us about the main character in Vampire Hunter's Daughter and what inspired you to write about her.

Chloe Kallistrate is the main character in The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter is a teen girl who witnesses her mother being murdered by vampires. She is rescued by vampire hunters and whisked away to their home. There she learns about her true identity, she is also a vampire hunter.

I love Chloe, she is smart, quirky and an average teenager. She is learning how to be a vampire hunter, but is still a kid, ya know. I am really enjoying discovering new things about her as the story goes on.

3. Cheeseburger or sushi?

Mmmm, I love sushi! Especially the rolls, those are my favorite!

4. Chocolate milk shake or lemon water?

Lemon water.

5. What is the toughest scene you ever had to write?

The toughest scene I ever had to write for The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter was when I was working on where Chloe and Drew kiss for the first time. I don’t know why it was hard, but… I just wanted it to be perfect and worth the wait.

6. Who are some of your favorite YA authors?

Ohhh, there are so many. I think right now, Cassandra Clare and Julie Kagawa are two of my most favorites. I could probably make you a list a mile long though.

7. If you were going to give one piece of advice to someone wanting to write YA, what would it be?

I would tell anyone wanting to write YA that they can do it. Just remember to think like a young person would, not like a grown up writing about a young person.

8. Do you have a playlist for the series?

Yes, I do! Here is a link to a blog post with the top ten songs on my play list!

9. What is next on your radar?

Right now I’m working on The Arcadia Falls Chronicles, which is the continuation of The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter. I am also working on another series that isn’t paranormal, it’s going to be called The Military Wife Chronicles, and I’m also working on some childrens stories.

Thanks Jennifer for stopping by the blog today!

Short Excerpt:

I took the first book off the stack and examined the cover. It was titled Vampires throughout History. The cover was leather and so old it was stiff and cracked in spots. The pages showed signs of age too, yellowing and stiff to the touch. There was no table of contents, so it looked like I was going to have to scan the entire book for what I was wanting. I flipped the pages carefully, so as not to tear any of them.

After an hour of scanning and about half way through the book, I found something referring to vampire children.
~~~
Although extremely rare, the natural-born offspring of vampires exist throughout the world. These rare beings are called the dhampir. Dhampir are usually the product of a vampire and mortal. The most common of these unions is a male vampire impregnating a mortal woman. Vampires, both male and female, are seductive in nature and some mortals came willingly to these unions. However, the majority of dhampir born were produced through an act of rape.
Solitary by nature, it is uncommon for a vampire to settle with any one mate for long. The children of vampires, the dhampir, more often than not exhibit all the characteristics of their vampire parent. The strength, speed and agility are the usual hereditary traits that the children develop. They are not always born with these traits but develop them as they grow into adulthood.
The dhampir are day walkers. Some of these children are sensitive to the sunlight but will not perish in the direct rays. Most have no sensitivity at all. Drinking the fresh blood of mortals is also not usually required of the dhampir; however, some have a liking for it. Very few actually need it to survive.
Most dhampir are rejected by the vampire species because of their mortality and weaknesses. Mortals often reject the dhampir, as well, due to their vampirism, so they frequently remain outcast.
Dhampir are known for becoming vampire killers. Their closeness to the vampires and their vampire characteristics make them powerful vampire hunters. The unique ability to track and kill vampires is specific to only the dhampir and the mythological race of vampire hunters.
Historically, dhampir became vampire hunters as a trade. Towns and villages became plagued by vampires who were terrorizing their homes and killing their people. The dhampir accepted contracts in exchange for monetary payment and used their likeness to their vampire counterparts to exterminate the vampires.
~~~

Holy crap, that was a lot to process. The more I read the passages, the more I understood that my being a hunter was more than my heritage; it was my history and my future. Everything about my bloodlines had hunters involved.

“Come on. You said you wanted a demonstration of the water element.”
“Oh, cool.” I followed him through the trails until we reached a clearing where a tiny stream ran into a rather quaint little pond. Oddly enough, the pond wasn‟t frozen. Perhaps it wasn‟t cold enough.
“This is pretty,” I told him.
He just nodded and said nothing while he set down his bow and backpack on a large old tree stump. I watched while he turned toward the pond and narrowed his eyes.
“Look at the water, Chloe, not at me.”
“Oh.” I changed direction quickly.
The stream poured out of the woods and into the pond with gently running ripples of water. I almost didn‟t notice when the water in the center of the pond began to swirl. The swirling gradually picked up speed and grew larger until it looked like a whirlpool. But whirlpools go downward into the water. This whirlpool began to rise up out of the water. It rose up maybe six feet and then the water spilled over from the top like a fountain. I glanced at Gavin. He stood stock still, silent, his eyes focused on the water.
Slowly, the swirling fountain of water receded back into the pond. I stood there, enthralled by the magic Gavin could do with his power.
“You‟re amazing,” I whispered to him.
“No,” he shook his head, “I’m not amazing. I can just do amazing things.”
“Well… I think you‟re amazing.”
He turned his head and caught my eyes. “I think you‟re amazing, and you haven‟t done anything like that.”
Oh, little did he know. For some reason, his comment made me want to show him what I could do, but I didn‟t even know if I could do it on command. So far it had only happened when I was angry.
He stared at me so deeply I felt naked.
“Gavin, what I just saw was magical. You make magic.”

New and Wonderful: Skinny by Donna Cooner

Find your voice.

Hopeless. Freak. Elephant. Pitiful. These are the words of Skinny, the vicious voice that lives inside fifteen-year-old Ever Davies’s head. Skinny tells Ever all the dark thoughts her classmates have about her. Ever knows she weighs over three hundred pounds, knows she’ll probably never be loved, and Skinny makes sure she never forgets it.

But there is another voice: Ever’s singing voice, which is beautiful but has been silenced by Skinny. Partly in the hopes of trying out for the school musical—and partly to try and save her own life—Ever decides to undergo a risky surgery that may help her lose weight and start over.

With the support of her best friend, Ever begins the uphill battle toward change. But demons, she finds, are not so easy to shake, not even as she sheds pounds. Because Skinny is still around. And Ever will have to confront that voice before she can truly find her own.

Goodreads

I just received this one in the mail and am excited to start it. Weight is something I am currently struggling with myself and this book has arrived at a timely point in my own life changing event. I hit twenty pounds lost a week or so ago. It was a hard won victory, but I still have over fifty pounds to go before I can call myself "ideal weight" for my height.

If you are looking for a gritty book this one is for you. Due out in October 2012, I think you will be as moved by Ever's story as much as I am currently. Make sure you mark it on your to be read list.

If you are currently in a battle with weight yourself, I would love to hear from you. Joining a support group and Weight Watchers is what has helped me.

Donna Cooner lives with her goat dog, Roxanne in Fort Collins, Colorado where she works as a professor of education. As a former gastric bypass patient, she was inspired to share some of her experiences with readers.

Drasmyr: Virtual Tour and Review

Drasmyr
by Matthew D. Ryan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
We vampires do not make easy prey. Our weaknesses are few, our strengths many. Fear is something we do not know, and death but a distant memory. So tread softly, pray to your god, and gird yourself with silver when the moons arise and night’s dark prince awakens. We fear not the wizard, nor the warrior, neither rogue, nor priest; our strength is timeless, drawn from darkness and we know no master save the hot lust of our unending hunger. We long for blood, your blood and no blade, nor spell, nor clever artifice, can keep us long from our prize. Feel our teeth at your throat, your life ebb from you, and know as darkness comes to claim you that the price of your folly is your everlasting soul.
There’s a woman in chain mail standing across the room from me; her sword is leveled at my chest. I can smell the enchantment on the blade, it’s a strong one; maybe even strong enough to cause me harm. Still, I’m not too concerned; it’s at least a ten foot lunge and I know I move faster than she does. Indeed, she’s the one who is looking worried. My display of strength and the death of her comrade have shaken her resolve.
She’s got a pretty face, flushed with excitement but strong and in control. It is her neck that really draws me, though, so soft and inviting, filled with the warm blood I desire. The curve of her flesh glistens, waiting for a well-placed gentle kiss.
She’s breathing rapidly now, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Her trek up through the castle has sapped much of her strength. And the fear she feels is naked in her eyes. Now, she’s getting ready to pounce, just a little too much tension in her stance, her eyes just a little too focused. She couldn’t give me more warning if she were to ask my permission first.
She moves in with remarkable speed, her blade striking out like a serpent’s tongue. Even winded, she still manages to cut my cape, then prances away with her back toward the wall, ready for anything. Anything, except me.
Overall:
If you are a fan of paranormal sci-fi and fantasy with a penchant for role playing games, you will love this book. The language reminded me of gamers that I hung out with in high school. The world building was very similar and author Matthew Ryan did a good job with it. More action oriented than I am used to, this book was a little confusing at the onset, but gained ground as I read further. The mystery element, vampires and strong plot make this a good pick for a teen that likes edgier books that fall into a fantasy and adventure range.
Even surrounded by people, Tess has never felt more alone. So she’s thrilled when James returns to the settlement, demanding to see Tess — until she finds out that it’s because her sister, Louisa, has been recruited into Tess’s old position at Templeton, and that the dangerously sadistic chosen one George has taken an interest in her.
NATURALS is the second book in The Lost Souls trilogy, and follows the dystopian hit CHOSEN ONES.
About Tiffany:  Tiffany Truitt was born in Peoria, Illinois. A self-proclaimed Navy brat, Tiffany spent most of her childhood living in Virginia, but don’t call her a Southerner. Tiffany recently added China to her list of travels (hello inspiration for a new book).
Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr: The Trailer
In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures--if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.
All Mallory knows of The City is that her father--and every other witch there--fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls.
From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and "Graveminder," comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one's own destiny.
Can you give one guy your heart and another your soul?
The last thing eighteen-year-old Breena Cross needs in her life is more complications. It’s all she can do to balance studying, working, trying to keep her foster-sister safe and drooling over the new guy at work. But things go from complicated to crazy when a fit of rage ignites the dark magic inside her and she finds herself fending off the supernatural underworld.
Myles, Breena’s drool-worthy coworker and vampire convict, is carrying a load of secrets--one of which is that he’s fang-over-lip in love with Breena and in danger of violating the terms of his sentence.
Orin is a soul-hungry assassin sent to kill Breena. However, he takes one look into her eyes and sees his own lost humanity. For once thinking of someone other than himself, he chooses not to end her life, even though it means risking his own.
Despite a convict and an assassin fighting over her, all Breena wants is custody of her sister. But to do this, she will need help from both Myles and Orin. And if Breena doesn’t learn to control the darkness within, she could lose her sister…forever.
WARNING: Contains strong language and some graphic content.
“You Breena Cross?” The white guy closed the distance between them.
“Who’s askin’?” she shot back.
“The witch has attitude.” The black guy moved closer.
“Hey, who you calling a witch, ass?” She gripped her car key tight against her palm, ready to go for the eyes first.
It happened so fast, she didn’t even have a chance to use her makeshift weapon. The white guy pinned her against the car door and her keys fell to the ground.
“We got her,” the white guy said. His breath smelled like rotten hamburger.
She tried to push him off her, but he forced her even harder into the door handle.
“He’s gonna be real happy with us, Jay,” the white guy practically sang.
Breena wondered who “he” was, but only for a second, because the guy’s lips pulled back and she saw his teeth. They were flat but, somehow, they looked sharp.
Sharp? What the hell?
His gaze was a roaring fire of hunger. Predatory. It looked like he wanted to rip her throat out.
He made a low growl and pressed his lips to her neck. A sound like crazed bees buzzed in her ears, nearly deafening her. She didn’t know what to do. Her palms began to sweat and, for a moment, she thought the blue light would be her saving grace, but her hands only shook.
“Back away from her.” The man sounded calm enough, but his voice had an edge to it that meant business.
“You lookin’ to lose a fight?” Jay swiveled around.
“I never lose.”
He appeared out of nowhere, grabbed Breena’s attacker by the back of his shirt and threw him a good two or three parking spaces down the lot. The black guy froze in place.
Her savior’s ears sprang up through his hair into two sharp points.
The two guys got one good look at the pointed ears and hauled tail.
Breena didn’t blame them for running. She would’ve joined them if curiosity hadn’t got the better of her. Besides, it was hard to be too scared of someone who’d just saved your life and looked sexy as all get out. So what if he had weird-looking ears?
“What are you?” She fidgeted with the strap on her backpack, swallowing her nerves.
He smiled, revealing beautiful not-at-all-sharp teeth. “You can’t tell?” He sounded surprised.
“No.” She twisted her hair. “Should I be able to?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve had very little experience with halflings.”
“You didn’t answer my question.” Halflings?
“No. I didn’t.”
Annoyance chasing away the last remnants of fear, Breena let out a little huff. Was he trying to push her buttons?
He moved closer, his steps as graceful as flowing water. His eyes caught her attention immediately--a ghostly pale-green with a golden circle around each pupil. Standing by her side, he propped himself against the VW.
“Amazing,” he whispered, staring at her. His gaze was intense, and slightly bewildered, as if he were trying to solve a riddle.
“What is?”
“Your soul. It’s strong.”
Weird much? She shifted on her feet, eyeing the keys on the ground.
“Sorry. You must think I’m a crazy superhero-wannabe.” He shook his head and traced his finger along his open palm. “Your kind is so rare.” His eyes lit up as he smiled. He stooped to pick up the keys and handed them to her.
Breena snatched them and started backing away from the car as nonchalantly as possible.
About to run like hell? Me?
“You asked what I am,” he said.
She hesitated. Nodded.
“I’m a preternatural.”
Guest post on witches, what you love about them!
Hi everyone!
What I love about witches is more than just the magic…it’s their connection to emotions. To each other. To nature. To something greater then themselves. Witches are more than spells, cauldrons and broomsticks. They are strong-willed girls and women with inner beauty and determination that won’t quit.
Breena Cross is part witch and her abilities are awakened as she tries to protect her foster sister. Her power is heavily tied to her emotional state… So she’s constantly faced with this inner struggle: does her magic control her or does she control her magic? You’ll have to read to find out! (I’m such a tease. lol)
In Witch Way to Turn, my witches are the figurehead of the supernatural community. They form the Witches Council (WC) and are able to blend their government in with the mundanes because of their corporation—Betty Lou Cosmetics.
EXCERPT
She ignored his emotional assault as she locked the door. They walked through the shared backyard, down the hill, and to the stony side of the river. She sat on the biggest rock, closest to the water. He trailed along after her at human speed, choosing a spot next to her on the gray surface.
A strong citrus smell hung in the air, like a bucket of lemon-fresh Pinesol had been dumped out nearby.
“I called the president,” he announced.
“Why?”
“You’re not safe here. I don’t know how to protect you anymore.”
“I don’t need protecting.” She pushed off the rock.
Myles grabbed her arm by the elbow. His touch sent little shockwaves through her body. Breena knew he only wanted to look out for her and Jenny but she needed him to help her understand this, not keep her from it.
“Dammit, Myles.” She tried to pull her arm free.
He released her the moment she started to resist. “Lucinda sent a local crew to clean up at Norma’s.”
“Lucinda?” She sat on the edge of the rock.
“The president.”
“What’s she the president of anyway?”
“The company the witches run. It’s their way of blending in. Keeping their power a secret.”
“Why all the secrecy?”
His eyes seemed to twinkle in the sunlight. It was distracting. “We all have our orders.”
Okay, so the witches must not be at the top of the food chain, even though the WC sounded like a very powerful lot. “Who do the witches take orders from?”
“The Djinn.”
She’d heard of them before. But where? Then she remembered a book she’d read in English class in high school. “Like genies?”
“Sort of.” Standing, he offered her his hand but said nothing more.
Guess this conversation is over.
Still there were plenty of things she wasn’t telling him either, so she couldn’t really complain. For starters, should she tell him about the feeding?
Overall:
This book has some snap and it grabbed me from the first page. I liked Breena immediately and was sucked in. We meet her first when she is at work, clock watching and worried about her sister. The voice comes across clear, with emotion blaring right through and that is a read worth pursuing. Breena is placed in the all too common situation of worrying about her sister, only the danger lurks at home with her foster mother's abusive boyfriend. When Breena lets loose, she unleashes a power that will drive every supernatural being within miles to her door. Compelling story line...I liked it a lot.
The characters, voice, realistic action, dialogue and the interesting love story really piqued my interest. I wasn't sure who to vote for, but that is part of the fun! If you want a fast paced, action packed supernatural adventure, then you will love this book!
