The Good Natured: Skeleton

Track List:

1. Your Body Is A Machine
2. Skeleton
3. Wolves
4. Be My Animal
5. Prisoner
6. Hourglass
7. Skeleton (NFIFTYFIVE Remix)

Label: ASTRALWERKS

Release: October 25, 2011
Available: Amazon.com, iTunes

The Good Natured are a British electropop band that had their first EP Warriors out in 2008. This album got a great deal of press and from there, the band's second release Your Body Is A Machine (2009) was signed by Parlophone. Now in October of 2011, they are releasing their much awaited album, Skeleton. The band consists of Sarah McIntosh (vocals, keyboards), Hamish McIntosh (bass) and George Hinton (drums).

"Wolves" is a high energy mix of electopop keyboard action, playful drums, creative riffs and Sarah's magnetic voice. The lyrics play with dark and the light to weave a Gothic tale of suspense both in word and sound. This piece enraptured me and I wanted to hear more.

"Hourglass" is haunting and thought provoking. Lyrics spin around you as keyboard, bass and percussion weave a spell you simply don't want to break. Sarah's voice holds a duality of crushed velvet and steel. This album would be at home in a Goth club or on your favorite alternative playlist.

With every track on the album, you have the mysterious element that is so dark and compelling about Goth music, but you also have the electricity of pop that doesn't allow this band to stay in just one genre. I for one am putting this album on my wishlist.

What I liked:

Every track was amazing. Usually you have one or two that are not quite what you are looking for. This is not the case here. The Good Natured have outdone themselves with this CD.

What I didn't:

I wish it was longer. At 23:45 minutes, I found myself spinning the album more than once, but trust me when I say, that was not a problem.

Overall:

5/5

This album is up there on my favorite new band list and I look forward to hearing the next release from this talented group of musicians. Their combination of the dark Goth feel and the energy of a pop song really makes Skeleton a must have album. I highly recommend it.

The Deepest Cut Giveaway

THE DEEPEST CUT:  a MacKinnon Curse novel
Sixteen-year-old Riley Williams has been able to see ghosts since the car crash that took her mother’s life and shattered her family. Guilt-ridden over the belief that she’s somehow responsible for her mom’s death, Riley is desperate to see her mother’s elusive spirit to gain her forgiveness.

When her father moves the family to Scotland so they can all start over, Riley believes her life couldn’t get worse––that is until the ghost of nineteen-year-old Ian MacKinnon catches her purposely cutting herself. An uneasy truce quickly turns into friendship, and soon Riley’s falling hard for Ian.

Riley believes her gift could help Ian end the curse that has kept him tied to the land for centuries, but that would mean letting him go forever and she’s not sure she is strong enough to do that. As if her life wasn’t complicated enough, the spirit of the woman who killed Ian returns and she’ll stop at nothing to keep Riley from helping Ian find eternal peace.

When I started reading this book, I was drying my hair and didn't think much about it. An hour later, I am still standing in the bathroom, frozen in place hairdryer doing goodness only knew what. I actually did need to get to bed because I had to go to work the next morning, early, but this book was so good, I could not put it down. I read while I rolled my hair, I read as I got into bed and until I couldn't see anymore. First thing in the morning, on goes the e-reader and I read while I ate my cheerios and did my makeup. Yes, I was almost late for work.

I know you want to win a copy of this wonderful story? Of course you do! Enter here for a chance to win an e-book.

Goodreads

Rating: 5/5

What I liked:

I really enjoyed the true life feel of this book. Riley's guilt about her mother's death and her own personality flaws make her feel like a living, breathing person. When her father moves the family to Scotland and she encounters Ian, a ghost haunting the countryside around her new home, things get really interesting. Enter the possessive wanna be ex-girlfriend and a little witchiness and you have yourself a page turner.

Funny story...I got the request from the author and downloaded the e-book while I was blow drying my hair. By the time I had my hair dry and in process of getting ready to go to bed, I was deeply entrenched in the book and was up until the wee hours of the morning. First thing in the morning, getting ready for work, I was back reading while I put on my makeup. I didn't budge until I had finished the book and was nearly late.

What I Didn't: Not a thing.

Overall: I loved it. Great characters that you grow to care about, excellent plot twists and a hunky ghost. What's not to like?

Exciting news: There will be more books coming out!

Question of the week:

What is your superhero alter-ego?

Answer:

I have always kind of liked Wonder Woman. Invisible plane...lasso...nice island in the middle of nowhere. It would be cool.

What super hero would you be?

Drink Slay Love: An Interview with Sarah Beth Durst + Giveaway!

Today we welcome the wonderful Sarah Beth Durst as she gives us an interview!

1. How did the idea for DSL come to you?

I was thinking about unicorns one day...  You know, your typical Saturday afternoon: eat tortilla chips, ignore the laundry, and think about unicorns...  And it suddenly occurred to me: unicorns are natural vampire hunters!  Look at them!  Built-in stake!  And the whole story grew from there.

2. What is a favorite Halloween memory?

At age six, I was adamant that I wanted to be a pink monkey for Halloween.   I don't remember why.  But I remember the certainty.  And I also remember the joy when my mother made me a pink monkey costume, complete with pink ears, a pink tail, and a pink belly.  To date, I think it's the coolest costume I've ever worn.

3. What authors have influenced your work?

I love Tamora Pierce, Diana Wynne Jones, Charles de Lint...  My favorite authors are the ones that make you think as you read, "Ooh, that's the coolest thing that could have possibly happened next!"  I really try hard to emulate that feel.

4. Are you a monster movie fan? What is your favorite?

I am an utter coward when it comes to monster movies.  But I can do funny monsters.  I love Monsters, Inc.  And Men in Black (if aliens can count as monsters).  Also, The Mummy and the Mummy Returns (so long as I shut my eyes for certain scenes).

5. Do you have a playlist for DSL?

Drink, Slay, Love is the first novel I ever wrote that has a true playlist.  Several songs are mentioned in the novel, and I also had a whole vampirish playlist to put me in the right writing mood.  Both lists are here: http://sarahbethdurst.blogspot.com/2011/10/drink-slay-love-playlists.html

And "vampirish" is a perfectly cromulent word.

6. What is your writing day like?

Wake up.  Deal with life.  Write.  Eat breakfast.  Deal with life.  Write.  Eat lunch.  Deal with life.  Write.  Eat dinner.  Deal with life.  Write, write, write.  Eat midnight snack.  Sleep.  Repeat.

7. What is Pearl's most quirky personality trait?

Not sure if "mostly evil" counts as a quirk, but Pearl is funny, fearless, and mostly evil.  She made writing Drink, Slay, Love such a joy.  Seriously the best writing experience I've ever had.  Pearl is pretty much made of snark, and she does not suffer fools.

8. Do you outline your books or are you a pantster?

I outline.  I like to see the barebones structure of the story before I begin.  Plus I think an outline makes the whole endeavor feel more manageable because it subdivides the project into chunks.  If you say, "Today, I shall write my novel," it can paralyze you.  But if you say, "Today, I'll write this bit"... you can do that.  Do it enough, and you'll eventually have a full novel.

9. What are you working on now?

I am working on revisions to Vessel, a standalone YA fantasy novel that will be out from Simon & Schuster in fall 2012.  I'm really, really excited about it!

10. What is one thing you want people to get from your books ?

I want to give people a couple hours away from whatever is bothering them in the real world.  I think books can be magic.  They can cast a spell that transports you out of your life and into another.  I want my books to cast that spell, to offer an escape, to make you laugh or make you feel or take you on a ride to places you've never been.

Thanks so much for interviewing me!

New on the Nook...Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

I started this book and can't put it down! Stay tuned for my up and coming review!

My Life Undecided by Jessica Brody Giveaway

PLEASE READ THIS! MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

Okay, maybe that was a bit melodramatic, but I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit melodramatic at the moment.

Here’s the deal. My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure.

But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. That’s right. I gave up. Threw in the towel. I let someone else be the one to decide which book I read for English. Or whether or not I accepted an invitation to join the debate team from that cute-in-a-dorky-sort-of-way guy who gave me the Heimlich Maneuver in the cafeteria. (Note to self: Chew the melon before swallowing it.) I even let them decide who I dated!

Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever.

But don’t take my word for it, read the book and decide for yourself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in frustration. Or maybe that’s just me. After all, it’s my life.
