Book Description:

"They say the truth can set you free. I found out it can kill you."

Seventeen-year-old Kat Matheson has never revealed the dark secret that sets her apart from everyone else: She can see and hear the dead. Until now, she has been able to ignore the strange apparitions and whispering voices. But it may not be that simple anymore. Haunted by eerie visions and increasingly frightening nightmares, Kat begins to fear she may be the target of a dark and ominous force from beyond the grave. Complicating matters is the arrival of her new neighbor, a young man she instinctively distrusts but is inexplicably drawn to. Gorgeous and mysterious, he seems to hold a disturbing knowledge of her long-held secrets.

As she desperately tries to maintain control, events take an unexpected and violent turn. Discovering that nothing is what it seems and that her psychic abilities may involve far more than just communing with the dead, Kat may be forced to confront her worst fears and the powerful curse that controls her destiny.

A gentle breeze moves through the trees and gooseflesh creeps up my arms. I look around cautiously, my ears straining for even the slightest sound. Nothing. No dreaded flashes of a ghostly pink dress. No brain-numbing whispering. Just an empty expanse of green, dotted with trees, the stark silhouettes of houses rising behind.

My phone buzzes again, the vibration rippling through the nerve endings in my hand like a low-voltage jolt of electricity. I feel a sudden desire to fling it as far away from me as I can.

Reluctantly, I look down and click on the message.

     RUN

Turning around, I see Rick, smiling back at me, waiting patiently. A scream of anguish and frustration begins to build deep inside of me and I hear a noise to my right, like the whooshing of wings. Jerking my head to the side, my eyes widen in shock, and I duck, narrowly missing a massive black bird as it sweeps past me, angling upward. I think I hear Rick say something, but his words are drowned out by the sound of my pulse pounding in my ears. I glance up, looking for the bird and see a large, dark shape sweeping past the top of the trees. I have no idea how any of it is connected – the girl, the texts, the bird – but instinctively I know they are. And it isn’t good.

I look at Rick again, the wonder and magic of this evening still singing through my veins, and my shock turns to anger. Hot, fiery, rebellious anger. This will not happen. Not tonight.

Clenching my jaw, I glare up at the sky. LEAVE ME ALONE, I scream in my head. Whatever issues this dead girl has, it has nothing to do with me.

Rick begins walking toward me. “Everything OK, Kat?”

I swallow, gathering my emotions back into a tight bundle. “Fine.” I force a smile onto my face, jogging back to him. “Just Rachel sending me another message.”

I step into the pool of light beneath the streetlamp, anxious to leave the darkness behind. Suddenly, the light flickers, an odd sizzling sound emanating from the globes. I stop and stare, watching as several sparks shoot out the sides. The bird, the largest crow I have ever seen, swoops down from the trees, one shining, jet black eye looking directly at me. Sound disappears and time seems to fold in on itself, slowing to half-speed. The same weightless feeling I’d experienced at school creeps over me, and I tense, fighting off the panic.

I stare at the bird, watching it descend lower and lower. It’s wings beat once, moving slowly down and back up again. Sparks continue to jet from the streetlamp, each brightly pointed flash of light spewing out in a torpid, glowing trail, before dropping slowly and silently to the ground. The bird is nearly on top of me. It sweeps past, close enough that I can feel the rush of air beneath its wings, gently lifting my hair. Then it arcs upward, higher and higher, before turning and diving back toward me again, it’s beak open in a silent cry.

I stand and stare, frozen in place, numb with shock and disbelief. My phone vibrates dully in my palm, and I slowly lower my head. As though acting strictly through muscle memory, my thumb pushes the message button.

     NOW

I look back up at the bird. Then at the streetlamp. And suddenly, I understand. The obscure text messages melding into clear and precise meaning. But my legs won’t move.

I gasp, inhaling sharply as I struggle to break free of the torpor that has possessed me, and the world abruptly charges back into normal motion, sound and movement taking on a vivid clarity. The bird rushes toward me, it’s head cocked at an odd angle. The sparking and sizzling of the streetlamp grows louder, the globes glowing and flashing like some kind of deranged sparkler on the fourth of July. I take one slow step backward just as the globes explode with a loud bang, hundreds of tiny pieces of glass slicing through the air. I yelp and duck, lunging to the side.

An interview with the author:

1. What first got you into writing for a YA audience?

I really enjoy the YA genre, and I think the potential for stories in this genre are limitless. When I first had the idea for Reckoning, I knew it had to fall into the YA category in order for it to play out the way it needed to. Kat Matheson, the main character in the story, needed a certain amount of innocence and naiveté that I wouldn't have been able to give her if she were older. For me, part of the appeal of YA is that characters (usually) aren't so jaded and cynical. They're on a journey of discovery and that's what make it so exciting.

2. How do you keep your story on track? Are you a panster or a plotter?

I'm probably a little of both. I do have a general outline for each book and I always know how I want it to end. But ideas come to me as I write, and frequently, scenes will take on a life of their own, sometimes shifting the direction I thought the story would take. I think the most important thing is to keep the main concept of the story in mind and then drive it to its conclusion. The unexpected sidetracks along the way are what keep it exciting.

3. Cheeseburger or sushi?

I'm going to have to say neither. I don't eat red meat and raw fish kind of grosses me out. But if it was cooked, I'd be all over it. I love Asian cuisine!

4. What was your favorite book as a teen and why?

I don't think I had a particular favorite. I've always been an avid reader and have always read a variety of genres. When I was a teenager, I read a lot of biographies, British history (I'm an extreme Anglophile), and British mysteries. Agatha Christie will always be the queen. I also loved those epic, British sagas by writers like Susan Howatch, Anya Seton and Thomas Tryon. I'd come home from the library with stacks of them and lose myself for hours within their pages.

5. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Get ready to gasp in shock...I don't really like ice cream. Crazy, isn't it??

6. What three things must you have on your pizza?

    Cheese, onion and bell peppers.

7. Flip open your book to any page and tell us what is happening.

Kat is walking by her neighbor's house and hears a crashing noise. Concerned, she makes her way inside and finds him prostrate and bleeding on the basement floor. It's obvious he's suffered some kind of physical attack. But from whom? There's no one else in the house and she didn't see anyone leave. Was it a supernatural attack or is something else going on?

8. What is your favorite series on television?

The Vampire Diaries!!!!! Love, love, love it.

9. What was the hardest scene you ever wrote and why?

The hardest scene I ever wrote is the ending to the Dark Prophecy series. The ending?? How am I even there yet? It's three books away! Well, like I said before, I always know how it will end. And, yes, I've already written the final scenes. It was hard for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, I can't tell you why or that will give it all away!

10. What is next on the writerly horizon?

Next is Book 2 in the series. Titled Relentless, I am nearing completion on the final chapters and it should be available in the spring. I'm also releasing the first in a new historical mystery series set in 1911 London. That should be available in the spring as well.

Falling Angels Saga Tour and Giveaway

Why I Love Research by E. Van Lowe

When I was young teenager in junior high school I hated doing research for school projects.  Back then, research seemed to be a boring waste of time.  Like so many lazy teens, I got as much mileage out of as little research as possible.  Fortunately for myself and my readers, I‘ve left the laziness behind.  Today, research is not only fun, it is crucial in shaping my ideas.
When I set out to write Boyfriend From Hell, the idea was fairly simple: protagonist versus the devil.  It was only when I began doing my research on angels that I discovered The Book of Enoch and the existence of fallen angels, also known as Nephilim.  In shaping my Nephilim character, Harrison, I chose not to go the route of Casandra Clare’s Shadowhunters (which I hadn’t yet read at the time) and stuck with the more romantic notion I discovered in the lost books of the bible: the idea that an angel could be willing to give up heaven for the love of a mortal woman.
This powerful, romantic notion emerges in Boyfriend from Hell and gets more developed in Earth Angel and Heaven Sent.  Even the title The Falling Angels Saga (explained in Heaven Sent) is based on this notion.  Use of my research can also be witnessed with the crucial characters of Ibwa and Orthon, demons whose existence I discovered surfing the net.

When I find a juicy piece of research, my mind starts reshaping my story around it.  The Falling Angels Saga would probably have been one short, boring book if not for my willingness to do research.  This is why I love research so much.  It makes me seem smarter than I really am. In a few days I will begin the research for the final book in the saga.  I have no idea of where it will take me, but I know it will help create something interesting and exciting for my readers.

*The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices are series by author, Cassandra Clare featuring demon fighting Nephilim known as Shadowhunters.

The Review:

This series is very much full on teen angst meets a massive fight between good and evil. Complete with a voice that sucks you in from the first page, these books will have you reading until late in the night before you realize you have done it. If you liked Twilight, Mortal Instruments or the Halo series, you will love these books. Paranormal twists, betrayals and some very devilish fun await your reading pleasure.

The relationship between Megan and her mom will make you laugh and roll your eyes. Any kid hates when their mom starts dating again (raise hands) and she is no different. The most fun is when you are trying to figure out exactly who is going to get the boyfriend from Hell. Lol. Great drama and lots of reading fun.

New And Awesome: Ashes of Twilight

Wren MacAvoy works as a coal miner for a domed city that was constructed in the mid-nineteenth century to protect the royal blood line of England when astronomers spotted a comet on a collision course with Earth. Humanity would be saved by the most groundbreaking technology of the time. But after nearly 200 years of life beneath the dome, society has become complacent and the coal is running out.  Plus there are those who wonder, is there life outside the dome or is the world still consumed by fire? When one of Wren's friends escapes the confines of the dome, he is burned alive and put on display as a warning to those seeking to disrupt the dome’s way of life. But Alex’s final words are haunting. “The sky is blue.”  What happens next is a whirlwind of adventure, romance, conspiracy and the struggle to stay alive in a world where nothing is as it seems. Wren unwittingly becomes a catalyst for a revolution that destroys the dome and the only way to survive might be to embrace what the entire society has feared their entire existence.

Well guys, this one looks pretty good. It is on my nightstand awaiting my attention and I wanted to share. I would love to hear from you if you have read this one. Looks awesome!

Description

Follow Ella through self-discovery, first love, tragedy and sacrifice in this paranormal romance.

After a fatal hit and run accident, Ella Monroe fears that she’s lost more than her beloved parents. Horrifying visions of a past life and a disturbing voice in her head have psychiatric professionals convinced that she’s lost her sanity as well. But when Kale--a dark and handsome stranger with a mysterious past--reveals the true meaning of her visions and the tremendous power she wields through them, Ella must come to terms with the devastating truths of her own past, while eluding an ancient Dark Prince who seeks to control not only her future, but all of mankind’s, by means of abilities that Ella is only beginning to understand.

Enter the shrouded world of an age old battle between an ancient race known as the Immortals and their bitter enemy Laurent, the so-called Dark Prince, who commands an army of half-breed vampires known as Chorý. Both sides have been desperately searching for the prophesied emergence of the Arc, a clairvoyant with unparalleled power to recall the past and a soothsayer with clear vision into the future.

The Council of Immortals has sworn to protect the Arc, whom they have identified as young Ella Monroe, a college freshman from Virginia living quietly and unaware of her powers or her past. But a renegade Chorý has other plans for the protection of a girl he has loved through the ages. Can Kale convince Ella of who she is, what she is destined to become, and what he once meant to her? Is he truly the best protector to shield the world from the devastating misuse of her powers that Laurent is bent on controlling? Or will the forbidden love they share and Kale’s cursed condition as a retched and hated Chorý be used against them both?

This paranormal romance told from the heroine’s perspective builds in intensity and intrigue to a finale you won’t see coming. Heart pounding action mixed with heartwarming friendships and heartbreaking romance will leave you breathless and begging for more.

Excerpt
“I want to untie you, but I don’t want to regret doing so. Can we agree that everyone will behave?” I looked at Kale, but all I received was a shrug and another grumble.
Jace’s blue eyes were glued to Kale.
“Ella, when I am untied, I will do whatever I can to take you back to the Council. I won’t have this creature infect you.”  Kale straightened up and moved closer to us.
“Over my dead body.”  Jace’s slow, chilling smile revealed his white teeth. Though it was beautiful, it freaked me out.
“Then it should be easy, Nosferat, seeing as how your heart no longer beats.” Jace looked at Kale as if he would attack the first chance he got.  At this rate, I would never be able to get Kale and Jace to work together. Maybe Kale was right. We might be better off fending for ourselves against Laurent.
“You mistake the fact you are still alive for weakness on my part, but I warn you that as soon she sees you are not a necessary factor for her survival, I will finish what we started years ago, Vesco,” Kale spat, with such malice that halfway through his words I turned around to face him, not at all liking what I saw. His face was now plagued by hard lines, and his eyes, though they were always dark, were darkened with loathing. I hardly recognized him. I didn't want to believe Kale would truly kill Jace or anyone for that matter.
“Stop, Kale, you wouldn’t,” I whispered. I searched his face for the Kale I knew. I understood the Council and vampires were enemies, but I couldn't see Kale killing Jace. It was probably my naivety that pushed the idea that Kale was harmless.
“Yes, he would, Ella,” Jace said, pulling my attention back to his blue eyes. “It’s what he is—a murderer fashioned only to steal what humans cannot live without and to spread his disease. He was created by the Dark Prince. No matter how long he tries to deny his nature by drinking from rats and squirrels, he will always be a threat to you and all others. Even more so because he can walk in the light.
My plan to unite them to help me went right out the window.  My body went cold, and I sat there wondering why I’d even tried in the first place.  Anger started to boil inside me, and I gave in to it.
“Bullshit!”  I yelled.  “This is pure and utter bullshit.”  I stood so fast that I almost lost my footing.
Kale reached out to me, catching my arm and righting me quickly.  I snatched my arm from him and ignored his questioning eyes. I turned back to Jace. I looked him directly in his eyes to get his full attention.
“You both say you want to protect me, and that’s fine.  Even though I have no clue of what’s going on in the full scheme of things, I am willing to let you both protect me, but understand this. If you two cannot figure out how to get along long enough for us to make a plan—other than taking me to the Council—I will do this without either of you!”  I shouted, as my anger reached a crescendo.  “Also, I want to know everything, not just what you two think I should know.”  I gave Kale a pointed look.
He looked back at me with emotionless eyes.  I hated when he blocked his feelings from me. I gave mine so freely to him.  That fueled my anger further, but Jace’s calm voice slowly brought me down.
“What is it you propose we do?” Jace asked.  “I can only assume from your tirade that he has told you a few things about your past.  The fact that you are only upset about that also tells me he hasn’t told you why the Dark Prince has yet to find you.”
We both looked at Kale waiting for him to speak.
“Your silence, Nosferat, confirms that you have not told her the fire at the Ocean Trace facility was your doing.”
I looked at Kale, confused. I had told him about my time in a facility, but I hadn’t told him where it was.
“I told you I was here to protect you, Ella. I just never told you when that protection started,” Kale explained and reached for me.
I was tempted to take his hand because it wasn’t often that he offered his touch, but I ignored it. “Wait, are you saying you knew me before that first night we met?”
“Yes, I knew you in your last past life.”
Jace scoffed. “That is not what she meant, vampire.”
I couldn't understand why Kale was dancing around my question.
“Let’s go outside,” Kale said, turning toward the door before I could answer.
“She will freeze out there.  I am sure she is already cold, especially seeing how the cold sadness of lies and betrayals has found her here tonight.”
Though Jace’s clever remark didn't seem to affect Kale, it stung me.  The words lies and betrayals slapped me in the face, waking me from the stupid dream state I had allowed myself to slip into.
“Ella, I have watched you for as long as the Council has believed you are the next Arc—before your parents’ death until now,” Kale said sadly, as the trust that we had developed between us started to fade.
I had been nothing but honest with him. I’d snuck around to see him, which put a strain on Alex’s faith in me. But I couldn't truly blame Kale. Trusting a stranger with my secrets when I had promised myself I would never do that again was my fault.  With that in mind, I walked over to Jace and untied his knots.
“Do not make me regret this.  I have enough of those; I don’t need any more,” I said, looking at them both.  We needed to make a plan of action, but we couldn't do that until I was told everything.

Guest Post:

Warm sunny days met with chilly evening, and gusts of wind that release the once clinging leaves into a lilt and tumble dance to the ground tells us we have entered into the season of fall. Depending on where you live the changes in foliage can be a grand display of vivid yellows, oranges and reds that would make an artist cry with delight, or a less impressive brown with with some yellows and reds. Either way, its a beautiful time of year.

Those of us who are not sun goddesses, but more a touch of vampire, relish this season and raise a toast in good riddance to the hot temps of summer. If you hadn't guessed, I am one of those people. I can get sunburned, fully clothed, under an umbrella, and slathered in 70SPF, looking much like a boiled lobster. Along with the entrance of fall, comes my favorite holiday of the year - Halloween. For a person who is more a big kid than an adult, Halloween allows me to be myself for one day, without the "don't make eye contact" look I usually get when I wear my favorite Scooby-doo t-shirt as my cell phone rings the theme from Dudley Do-Right when my husband calls.

Yes Halloween is something I look forward to every year. Much to my husband's dismay, I start hunting for my next amazing addition to my ever growing collection of decorations before summer even begins (the cool things always sell out quickly). Now I'm not talking cheesy stuff, but items that other Halloween enthusiasts say, "Ooooh! I want one of those." Like one year I spent two months putting together a leather hand bound Book of Shadows with sections like "Spells and Charms", "Creatures of Light", "Potions and tinctures" etc. Last year's handy work were hand made black candles I made from PVC, black glue (glue gun glue) and battery operated tea lights that insert up top. I had black glue everywhere, but they came out amazing and they got lots of "oohs and awes".

I suppose I owe a debt of gratitude to the holiday, as it brings out my creativity in many different ways, and gears me up for the holidays and another possible book. Now you may not enjoy Halloween or fall as much as I do, but I hope that this blog post at least has you thinking about all the possibilities fall has to offer you. It's the beginning of the holiday season in my house and that means family, food and good times. So I say to you, embrace this season and enjoy the smells of apple cider on a cold day, the crunch, crunch, crunch of crumbling leaves under your footfall, the feel of a kitten soft scarf on your neck and chin, while you wrap your arms around your family and friends in big warm bear hug.

Short Excerpt:
It was a perfect day for a funeral, if there is such a thing—gloomy, gray, and cold. With steady tears of rain, the heavens seemed to be mourning along with the funeral guests. Though Ella stood strong as the pastor droned on, she would never be consolable for the loss of her beloved grandmother, Rose Grey McKaye. Ella had known for a while this day was coming as her grandmother combatted bouts of cancer, a stroke, and dementia, but all of that was not enough to prepare her for the overwhelming loss she now felt.
Ella heard no voices of condolences from those who one by one took her hand in sympathy. She only heard the rain tapping on the shiny mahogany casket covered in a blanket of chrysanthemums and peonies in front of her. Occasionally she would nod her head to the speaking sympathizer but she never took her eyes off of the coffin. Instead, she watched as a drop of water hung to the tip of a fern frond, gathering more volume until it could no longer hold on and dropped down the curved lid of the casket, and then meandered down the side stopping only for a moment by one of the carrying handles. It continued down to mingle with other drops at the base of the aluminum stand. It lingered and swelled until it could no longer resist the relentless tug of gravity and it fell to the fake green grass carpet laid out to disguise the recently excavated mound of dirt from the grave into which her grandmother would soon be lowered.
The long line of umbrella-toting guests passed before her then scattered among the graveyard to their warm, dry cars to go on with their lives. How odd, Ella thought, that time doesn’t stop for a moment to acknowledge the passing of one so loved. She felt sure that she hadn’t taken a breath since she had received the call two days before, notifying her that her grandmother had died. How would she ever survive life without her grandmother?
Ella’s childhood had been hard and she’d grown up fast and insecure in herself. The only happy memories she’d had as a child were in those blessed, short-lived visits to Grandma Rose’s house where Ella knew without a doubt she was welcome, safe, and loved.
Ella’s mother had not been a bad person, but Ella had learned at an early age that she was an anchor to her mother’s freedom. Patricia had been widowed when Ella was a toddler. She had no family of her own to speak of, and found herself a single mother with no job and no real skills. First the parade of men came, none of which ever seemed to measure up to her late husband, and then came the drugs which made the unhappy, lonely woman lost and unstable. Needless to say, this brought about a rather turbulent life for Ella’s early years.
A warm hand touched Ella from behind, guiding her away from the men now lowering the casket into its new home. They cleared away the fake grass carpet, revealing the reality and finality of what was happening. Goodbye Grandma Rose, Ella said without speaking. I love you so...and the car door shut on Ella’s words and pulled away from the curb as its wipers slapped the sides of the windshield with a squeaky but constant beat.
