Of Fire and Roses Book Tour and Giveaway

Excerpt 3:  I came to stand on the branch that I would jump from. Holding on to the branch above me, I edged my way out to the dangled rope. With one hand, I grabbed the rope and pulled it toward me. I inched back a few steps to give myself a decent amount of swing room. The rope was fraying, coarse, and rough in my hands. I could hear loud shouts and whoops of encouragement from below, but I blocked them out, shut my eyes…then jumped.

Free…Swinging out in the air, I forgot everything in that brief moment of peace. Letting go of the thick rope for that split second of suspension, I felt like I was flying. Then, I was no longer flying. I was slamming—slamming into the cold, glassy lake. The impact shattered every cell in my body as the pain of hitting a sheet of solid water turned me to jelly. Then I was under. I opened my eyes. Murky darkness surrounded me.

I don’t know how far I was submerged but I could see rays of sunlight piercing through the surface into the depths. I waited for the moment my feet would hit the bottom so I could push off and resurface. Feeling the sludgy sand between my toes, I closed my eyes again and prepared to launch myself skyward. I don’t know why, but my feet were stuck. Something cold and slimy had wrapped itself around my left leg, tendrils crawling like ants around my calf. All the air in my chest escaped in a single cloud of air bubbles making a frenzied dash for the surface.

Kicking and flapping about, I tried to dislodge whatever had caught my foot. I needed air but every time I opened my mouth it filled with the ceaseless rush of muddy water.

Don’t panic, don’t panic, don’t panic! I crunched myself into a ball and stretched my arm down in a vain attempt to remove whatever it was that had the vice grip on my ankle. I wrapped my hand around the offending root that held me. Terror stopped my heart and froze my blood, and my eyes shot open. Clamped around my leg was a grizzly, white-knuckled hand extending out of the lake floor. I struggled and fought to pry the digits loose. It was no use, my ankle was locked fast, and I had nothing left.

Given the go-ahead, the murky liquid hungrily searched for any way to penetrate and take over my body. A thousand knives pierced through me as I battled for every last scrap of oxygen. My arms and legs spasmed once, then twice, then stopped fighting and went deathly still. An ethereal calmness took over. I knew right then I was dying. I thought of Cora, imagining her warmth and fire, and I found peace. I pictured her arms wrapped around me, holding me tight forever and never letting go.

Author Bio:  Danielle Belwater adores the concept of true love and thoroughly believes everyone has their Prince Charming or Snow White out there somewhere, even if they have to fight demons, ghosts, and wizards to find it.

Danielle has been having a love affair with words since she was young and in primary school, writing some rather imaginative tales. This love has followed her into adulthood.

She lives in rural South Australia with her husband, young daughters and way too many animals to mention. She spends most of her time dreaming up characters, stories, ghostly tales, and watching Firefly re-runs.  She also cooks the odd meal for her family to avoid them looking like skeletons at official author functions!
Danielle is passionate about reading and her interests include pretty much anything with words from rolling four volume epics to the daily newspaper.

The Convenience of Lies: A Visit with Kimberly Castillo

“It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. All that matters is if you can. If you can do something, what difference does it make?"

Based on a true story, The Convenience of Lies is a novel that keeps readers up past midnight with its story of friendship, mystery, crime, sex, and betrayal. Set in a suburban town, this story is told through the eyes of a high school junior, Mackenzie, who describes her crush on a "bad boy," Ramon and her relationship with her best friend, Kira. During the course of the story, Mackenzie does her best to attract the affections of Ramon while her friendship with Kira evolves. Eventually, the different characters' property starts getting vandalized and a mystery develops as Mackenzie and Kira try to get to the bottom of who is behind the vandalism.

Setting Up A Book Signing as an Indie Author

When The Convenience of Lies was released, I wanted to have a book signing soon thereafter to create some buzz about my book. I would say that one reason why it’s nice to be traditionally published is because you will have a publicist helping you do things like schedule book signings at your local Barns and Noble and publicize your event. When you’re an indie author, you have to do all of this yourself.

In this blog I’ll tell you how I went about scheduling my first book signing…

I have to admit I felt a tad daunted by this task because I needed to find a professional venue in which I could hold this book signing. As many sources recommended, I started with asking my local private bookstores if they would be interested in hosting my book signing. I didn’t have terribly good luck with this route because many of these bookstores are hesitant to host self-published novels. And so next I approached some of the local privately owned businesses in my area... cafĂ©’s and such. While I didn’t have any takers in this department, I still think this is a possibility indie writers could consider exploring.

Finally, it dawned on me that I could ask local libraries to host my book signing. In exploring this option, I realized that the libraries that should be targeted for a book signing event are private libraries. Public libraries have their hands tied a bit with rules prohibiting book sales within the venue. (But as an aside, making a relationship with your public library may not be a bad idea. You can schedule speaking events to promote your book). I was surprised with how many private libraries were in my area, and especially excited when the first one I contacted was eager to host my book signing.

In order to get my book signing approved at the library, the librarian had to read my novel to make sure it was “acceptable.” In that there was no “white supremacy” material in it or something of that nature. I was more than enthusiastic to provide her with a free copy of the book to read.

Once we settled on a date, the librarian and I went to work promoting my event. She submitted a press release to the local newspaper and also created fliers that she hung all around the library. She gave me some of the fliers that I distributed as well. I also contacted all of the English teachers in the local schools and asked them to tell their students about my event. Again, I was met with wild enthusiasm. Some of the teachers asked to read a copy of the book before promoting my event in their classrooms… which I gladly provided for free. Other teachers actually offered extra credit to their students if they would attend my event.

The results exceeded my wildest expectations. Over 100 people showed up for my book signing. People were actually standing at the back of the library’s conference room because they ran out of space to sit.  I gave a talk about my book, my writing process, and read a review of my book as well as an excerpt. Afterwards I nearly sold out of copies of the novel… I only had one left!

One suggestion I would make is that if you do have a book signing event, make sure it’s documented! Have the event filmed and photographed. After the event was over, I posted these materials to my facebook, blog, twitter, and my book’s website. You can check out the video for my event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpGiHqkRFc0

Resistance Book Blitz

Book & Author Details:

Resistance by Jena Leigh
(The Variant Series #2)
Publication date: February 11th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Alexandra Parker might be the most powerful Variant the world has ever seen—but even that won’t get her out of finishing her junior year of high school.

The challenge of keeping her abilities under wraps during class is daunting enough, but throw one surly, sandy-haired Jumper into the mix, and things can get downright complicated.

Declan’s new job? Watch over Alex while she’s at school and do everything in his power to keep her from losing control. But as sparks of every kind begin flying between Alex and her new bodyguard, she's left feeling more unstable than ever.

When avoiding her abilities results in a surprise visit from her parents’ killer, Alex’s worlds collide with a bang that nearly levels Bay View High.

With her freedom now squarely in the Agency’s crosshairs, Alex will be faced with the fight of her life... and a decision that could forever alter the course of her destiny.

----

How did you come up with the idea for the Variant Series?

The inspiration for the Variant Series as a whole came from many different places, but the original spark for Revival came in the form of my morning coffee. One day at the coffee shop, the barista had drawn the shape of a phoenix into the foam on my latte. The image set my mind to wandering and I spent the next half hour writing out a scene where a young girl was being chased by a wall of flames through a burning bookstore. That piece would eventually become the opening scene of Chapter Four in Revival.

Can you give us a hint to what we should be expecting in your second book?

In Resistance, book two in the Variant series, the stakes are raised even higher for Alex and the gang. As Alex struggles to get a grip on her newfound powers, she’s faced with a far more daunting assignment—survive the last few months of her junior year without accidentally losing control and leveling Bay View High.

But the risk of outing herself and the Variant population at large would be a lot easier to handle if the Agency wasn’t still breathing down her neck… and if Declan weren’t quite so distracting in his newfound role as Alex’s bodyguard.  As sparks of all kinds start flying, Alex is left struggling to keep her head above water and her heart in one piece. And when her freedom lands itself in the Agency’s crosshairs, Alex will be faced with the fight of her life.

Where do you like to write?

Anywhere and everywhere. I seem to do my best work in unfamiliar places. I’ve written on planes, at the mall, in doctor’s office waiting rooms… If I have my computer or a journal with me, I’ll usually try to get a few words on the page. There’s something about traveling that helps me to tune out distractions and focus, while at the same time inspiring my writing.

Do you decide character traits before you sit down to write the book, or as you go along?

Character traits are usually decided on as I write. I very rarely have an entire character in mind when I sit down at the keyboard. I usually start with a few random traits—a name here, a face there, a quirk or two to distinguish them, an important bit of backstory that forever changed their life or altered their personality—and then the personalities of my characters become clearer to me as I make it further into the story.

Who is your favorite character in the series, and why?

Oh, that’s a tough one! It seems to change from day to day. Right now I’d probably have to say that Declan’s sister Kenzie is my favorite. She’s sassy, sarcastic and I can always count on her for a witty rejoinder. Kenzie’s scenes are always enjoyable to write.

Tell us about the biggest challenges you face in your writing process.

I think the biggest challenge I have is in plotting out a story. When it comes to my writing, I’m a total pantser and I despise outlining. Writing only feels natural to me when my characters are the ones telling the story. I love being just as surprised as my readers are when something unexpected happens in the narrative. When you’re working on a series, however, that doesn’t always work. You need to have some idea of where the story is headed before you begin, otherwise it’s very easy to write yourself into a corner.

If you could give a young writer any tip, what would it be?

Write constantly and read everything you can get your hands on. It seems like such an obvious piece of advice, but it’s quite possibly the most important things you can do to improve your writing.

If you weren't writing, what would you want to be doing for a living? What are some of your other passions in life?

Rock star! I mean, really. Who hasn’t wanted to be one at some point? Aside from writing, I’m incredibly passionate about music. I love it, but I haven’t got a lick of talent (although that doesn’t stop me from singing at the top of my lungs in the shower every morning). If there’s not a song playing in the background somewhere, I usually don’t know what to do with myself.

Resistance Excerpt

Kenzie drummed her fingers idly on the top of her desk. Slouched in her seat, she stared unblinking at the black hands of the clock mounted to the wall above the whiteboard. All around the room, students waited in small groups for the bell to release them and their weekend to begin.
Three minutes until the final bell.
Three minutes, and she’d be free.
Three minutes, thought Kenzie, and I’ll be on my way toward my next coffee fix.
That bell really needed to hurry itself up.
She had places to be.
Kenzie sighed. The longer she went without a fix, the harder it was to silence the thoughts emanating from the sea of humanity around her.
Caffeine meant focus.
Focus meant an easier time of keeping the walls up and the voices out.
She wondered, briefly, what telepaths did before the discovery of caffeinated beverages. The thought made her shudder. Control without stimulants in the bloodstream was possible, of course. But it was far from a pleasant way to go. Especially in populated areas.
Wham!
Kenzie jolted upright, the sudden movement causing her desk to bang into the back of the seat in front of her.
Something had just slammed into her mental walls with enough force to send a stab of pain through her temple.
What the crap was that?
Around the room, the steady flow of conversation dried up.
It wasn’t just Kenzie. That pulse had hit everyone.
Even the norms.
Kenzie got slowly to her feet.
A funny thing happens when norms experience Variant abilities firsthand. Instead of seeing the supernatural for what it is, nine times out of ten, they will translate their experience into something that better fits the rules of their reality.
The brilliant light of a jumper’s teleport becomes a camera flash, the telekinetic movement of objects through the air gets blamed on a strong gust of wind, and mental assaults are automatically translated into something external.
“Did you hear that?” asked a freckle-faced blonde from across the aisle. “Sounded like a sonic boom, or something.”
“Yeah! I heard it, too!” said another. “Wonder what it was?”
She supposed the better question was not what was it, but who was it?
The wave came again, this time with twice the strength behind it. Kenzie grabbed for the back of her seat to keep from losing her balance.
Fear.
The wave wasn’t a thought, it was a distilled emotion. Someone, somewhere, was absolutely terrified.
Judging from the nervous expressions on the faces of the students around her, that fear was not only being broadcast to the rest of the school, it was also creeping its way into their subconscious.
Kenzie sifted through the residue of the psychic onslaught in an attempt to identify the source.
The second she caught a glimpse of that all too familiar thought signature, she cursed—loudly, to the surprise of the students standing stock-still beside her—before sprinting toward the door.
Halfway down the locker-lined hall the ground began to shudder, the floor practically roiling beneath her feet.
Earthquake? she wondered.
But this was Florida. Florida didn’t have earthquakes.
Declan appeared at the other end of the hall, running in her direction.
“Where is she?” called Kenzie.
Her brother ducked through a swinging door just ahead of her.
The girl’s bathroom?
Kenzie followed him in.
Oh my god.”
Alex was on her knees in a shallow sea of water, dripping wet, her hands clutching the sides of her head.
Water flooded the room. The porcelain sinks lining the wall lay shattered and in pieces on the ground. A large, spherical indentation was blasted into the wall behind Alex and what could only be burn marks scorched onto the ceiling above.
As Kenzie watched in amazement, strands of water began swirling around her friend, encasing her in a glittering sphere of liquid before losing form and crashing back down around her.
A shimmer of light rippled across Alex’s body, distorting her appearance like a mirage on desert sand.
“I can’t…” Alex was sobbing. “There are too many, Declan. I can’t make them stop!”
Declan edged as close to Alex as he dared, his expression grim.
Alex finally lifted her head to look at them.
Kenzie took an involuntary step backward. She had seen the way a jumper’s eyes changed color, the brilliant violet light causing their eyes to glow brightly in the moments before and after they teleported, but Alex’s normally gray eyes were now shifting colors with every beat of her heart.
Jade.
Violet.
Ruby.
Azure.
Black.
Alex collapsed.
The rumbling in the floor intensified, sending Declan into action. He sloshed through the water, reaching down to grip Alex under her arms.
“Get the door,” he called over his shoulder.
Kenzie held the door for Declan as he dragged Alex into the deserted hallway.
“Take my arm,” he ordered, maintaining his hold on Alex. “Let’s go, Kenzie.”
Terrified of being this close to Alex during a meltdown, but knowing her brother would leave her behind if she didn’t act fast, Kenzie lurched forward and grabbed Declan’s upper arm.
They jumped with the sound of the final bell ringing in their ears.

Excerpt:

I sat back and watched Lieutenant Kirk's face. At first I could tell he thought Max was losing his mind He shuffled in his spot and kept sneaking glances toward us as if we were going to disappear in a puff of smoke. His eyebrows arched so high at one point I thought they might migrate into his hair for good.
Yep! Obviously he thought we were all crackpots. At least he has the decency to let Max finish what he was saying. When Max did finish the Lieutenant just sat there with a blank look on his face. You could tell his brain had gone way into overdrive. I checked Max's reaction. He was looking back at me, the expression on his face worried. An expression I was fairly certain we all wore. I wonder how long it would be before he'd speak.
"Well, this is a lot to take in. I'm not really sure what to say to be honest and I really don't know what to do," he said as he looked around at each of us.
"Maybe if I explain a bit more about their past you might b—" Max started to say.
"What is that smell? Did you guys put something in the oven?" the Lieutenant interrupted.
"No, we didn't." Henry said wrinkling his nose.
"What's wrong, Lukas?" Marley asked as she saw the look on his face. Next thing I knew she was jumping up off the couch and moving toward him.
What the hell was Lukas doing? He had ripped his jacket off and was in the process off tearing off his T-shirt. What was that smell? God it was awful, like something burning. Then something clicked in my brain, and my stomach dropped.
Marley screamed and we leapt up. Lukas had perfect circular burns appearing all over his arms and chest. His eyes met mine, terrified, as he sank back onto the couch.
Henry grabbed for my hand and I saw the horror reflected in his eyes. I knew what he was thinking, what Marley and Lukas were thinking too. Max was staring at Lukas, his face almost as white as Lukas'. The only one in the room who seemed to have no idea what was going on was Lieutenant Kirk.
"Somebody care to tell me what's going on? Why the hell has he got burns popping up all over him? Max! What's going on?" he asked, flustered.
"I told you, whatever he does to Lauran, it happens to Lukas too," Max said quietly, still staring at Lukas in disbelief.
"Jesus, you mean he has just done this to that little girl? My God, the bastard!" He looked truly horrified.
"Do you believe us now?" Marley snapped as she rounded on him. She was shaking and struggling to hold back tears. Lukas took her hand.
"Don't worry, I can handle it. It's not as bad as my wrists, although it will be hard to sleep tonight. I won't be able to roll over much," Lukas said, trying to put on a brave face for us.
"Max, get the boy the doctor, quick," Lieutenant Kirk barked out. "I'm sorry, son, can I get you anything to make you more comfortable?"
"No, there is nothing you can do." Lukas closed his eyes and concentrated on breathing deeply. He wasn't letting on just how much pain he was in. Marley was whispering in his ear and kissed him gently on the forehead. She was doing a great job of keeping it together.
"Lukas," I said quietly, tears threatening to spill over any second.
"Don't, Alex. It is not your fault. Don't even go there, okay?" Lukas said without even opening his eyes.
I sat back down and stared at him. The poor guy, you could see how much effort it was taking him to block out the pain. Tears ran unchecked down my face. Why is this happening to us?
A small sob escaped, and Marley threw me a look that said, "get it together" and shook her head. She was right. I had to pull it together for Lukas. I stood, went outside, sucked in a few deep breaths, and leaned up against the wall before I completely lost it. Slowly, I slid to the floor and sobbed to myself for a few seconds before Henry's feet appeared in my line of sight. He kneeled down and shuffled himself against the wall next to me. He reached around to pull me to him, holding me while I blubbered. When I calmed myself a little I looked up at him, wondering if I would be able to be as strong as Marley if that was Henry in there in so much pain.
"Feeling better?" he asked gently as he kissed the side of my head.
"Yes and no. He's so strong, Henry, but how can he keep putting up with pain? How can they both keep on going with this? This is crazy, it doesn't make any sense. I was looking at you just now wondering if I could watch you go through that and I don't know that I could. Marley is so strong."
"You know Marley lost it big time when Lukas got the rope burns. She's just figured out that being strong helps Lukas stay strong. And I'm sure you would be just as tough. You have been reliving that dream every night and you haven't lost your mind yet, have you?" he said giving me a squeeze.
I sighed and wrapped my arms around him. "Thank you, Henry. I don't know how I would cope with this if you weren't around."
"We all need to be there for each other if we are going to get through this. Come on, we need to get back in there. All right now, babe?" he asked as he got to his feet.
"Yes, I'll be all right." I took the hand he offered me. He pulled me to my feet and turned to head back to the room. I tugged him back toward me and kissed him softly.
"What was that for?" he asked as I pulled away.
"For being you. For calming me and giving me strength," I said. And being everything I've ever needed.

Interview:

1. I write because… I find it relaxes me and because I enjoy it.
2. If I were your favorite cookie, what would I be? I'm not much of a cookie fan so I guess just the boring choc chip.
3. Plotter or pantster? Oh , most definitely a pantster. Plots and scenes can change almost daily with me.
4. What is your favorite type of character to write about and why? I do love to write an independent woman. Someone with a bit of sass and not scared to call it how it is.
5. Hamburgers or sushi? Both!!
6. Name three things on your desk. Ipod dock( I can't write in silence), a notepad to doodle on when things aren't quite going to plan and a waterbottle ( I tend to get into writing a little too much and forget to drink and eat, so the waterbottle sitting in front of my face is a constant reminder.)
7. What books have influenced your writing style? In the YA genre, Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter series and Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books inspired the need to write not just romance but action and mystery as well.
8. Tell us a little about your book.  In my first book in the Sightseeing Series we meet Alex and her three friends Marley, Lukas and Henry. These four discover a unique connection, but with the connection comes more than they bargained for. They end up in a race against time to save a kidnapped girl and one of their own.
9. What advice do you have for new and aspiring authors? Never give up, just keep writing. It took me almost three years to finish my first book, but writing "the end" is an accomplishment in itself.
10. What is next on your writerly horizon? Book two in the Sightseeing Series is under way and also another YA/NA book is almost finished. I also have several other ideas for books.

Top 5 favorite (pick one) desserts, movies, things to eat, ice cream flavors, books.

Biography

I live in a small town just outside Mackay, Queensland, Australia. In between working at the local high school in the special education unit, ferrying my three girls back and forward to swimming squad and carnivals and the rest of that inconsequential mum/wife business, I write. In those rare spare moments I try to get down a small portion of the many different plots and schemes I have running through my mind. About three years ago, a special lady, she knows who she is, talked me into writing. I ummed and aahed over the idea for ages, I had no idea where to start. But one morning I had an idea and pulled out the laptop and went for it. Most nights now I drop off to sleep planning new scenes. I'm also an obsessive reader. I would simply curl up and die if I didn’t have a book to read. I read anything and everything, when I was younger I would pull out the old encyclopedias if Mum wouldn't let me go to the town library. It is a rare day that I don't pick up a book, even if it is only for five minutes before I nod off.
