Red Riding Hood

The body of a young girl is discovered in a field of wheat. Her flesh mutilated by telltale claw marks. The Wolf has broken the peace.

When Valerie learns that her sister has been killed by the legendary creature, she finds herself at the center of a dark mystery, one that has plagued her village for generations. It is revealed that the werewolf lives among them, and everyone in the village immediately becomes a suspect. Could her secret love Peter be behind the attacks on her town? Is it her betrothed, Henry? Or someone even closer to her?

As the men in the village hunt for the beast, Valerie turns to her grandmother for help. She gives Valerie a handmade red riding cloak, and guides her through the web of lies and deception that has held her town together for so long. Will Valerie discover the werewolf's identity before the town is ripped apart?
(Goodreads)

What I Liked:
The story was good and had a great blending of the fairy tale I remembered as a kid and a more modern version that kept me turning the pages to see who the identity of the wolf turned out to be. I loved that just when I thought it was one person, it could have easily been another.

What I Didn't:
When I invest in a book, I invest in the ending too. Not a page at the end of the book telling me to go to a website and then the website not offering me the ending I have been waiting for. Not cool. Thumbs down on that part of it. I get that they are probably waiting for the movie, but give a girl a break. I want my ending. In the book.

Overall:
Aside from my mini-rant, I did enjoy the book. Just wish I knew how it ended. I would have given it 5 out of 5 except for that little trick at the end. 3 out 5 for killing me with no ending.

Red Riding Hood falls under both the Shifter and Fantasy Reading Challenge.

What I'm Reading Now...

Anne is trying her best to live a normal life, but she's still got some power sparking inside her. She's hearing and seeing things that she tries her best to ignore-like being haunted by a Russian sea nymph that claims the princess Anastasia is still alive. (Goodreads)

If you liked Joy Preble's first book, Dreaming Anastasia, this one will make you happy. I started reading it, and am having trouble putting it down to read my other book (A Discovery of Witches. Check out http://bookgirlknitting.blogspot.com/ for details.

Anne is being stalked by an uber creepy mermaid chick in a lilac dress and she is trying to forget Ethan, the hunky Russian who has stolen her heart. But can she move away from the past and boy that haunts her dreams. Guess we will have to find out. Check out this great book. It is just hitting the bookshelves now.

Library Issues & Taking Action

Library Issues & Taking Action

So I got a call from a librarian friend this week and she told me about the upcoming budget cuts that are pending for our libraries here in Texas. Not cool.

What libraries can do for you...
Books you might not be able to afford
Audio books to listen to in your car or on your MP3 player.
E-books to read on your computer, Nook or IPad.
Classes. Lots of stuff to learn.
Knitting and needlework groups to learn how to make some cool things. Free usually.
Computers. If you don't have one, it is awesome to be able to go to the library and use their computers.

The list could keep on going. If you have a voice, use it to keep the budget for libraries intact. If you don't pass this blog posting to someone who does. Click on the link under the picture for deets. You never know. You might need a library one day.

In keeping with the theme of No Name Calling Month, what is your favorite book that deals with the problem of bullying?

No Sticks. No Stones. No Name-Calling Week

Bullying. It pretty much sucks. Almost all of us have been there at one time or another. To bring fresh awareness, Barnes & Noble is partnering with Simon & Schuster and GLSEN to sponsor No Sticks. No Stones. No Name-Calling Week, and making the entire month of January as "No Name-Calling" month. Events include an Educator Week from January 15-23 with stores handing out No Name Calling materials for teachers and educators. There will also be a national Storytime in all B&N stores on Saturday January 15th at 11:00am. The event will include a reading of Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and One by Kathryn Otoshi along with arts and crafts.

Barnes & Noble is featuring a web page for anyone wanting more information. There are videos by some of todays leading teen and middle grade authors, and they will be featured through out the month of January. To check it out, visit www.bn.com/noname. You can also visit www.nonamecallingweek.org.

Reading Now...

If I Stay is a page turner of a book. What would you do if your family was ripped away from you in a horrible car crash? Would you stay? Would you want to die? These are some of the tough questions author Gayle Forman asks in this provocative book. So far, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars and still reading.

Favorite Series

OoThis series gets my complete thumbs up. Not only does it rate pretty much all of my lunch money, it actually has plot, snark and characters I care about.

I know lots of you are tired of the standard vampire series, but this one is really good. To me, it is better than Twilight.

What I liked...
Everything. Plot. Characters. Cute guys. Vampire politics. Lots of books in the series.

What I didn't...
Nothing except the newest one was in hardcover and the rest came out in paperback.

Overall...
A great series about a girl who is so smart, she graduates high school at a young age and wants to go to college. Her mom picks a small college in an even smaller Texas town so she will be safe. Too bad the town is run by vampires...

5 out of 5 stars.
